Tesla Launches Cybercab in Austin

Tesla has officially launched its two-seat robotaxi, the Cybercab, at an invite-only event in downtown Austin on Thursday. Riders can now use the Robotaxi app to hail the vehicle, marking its debut in passenger service. Currently, Texas has authorized 45 Cybercabs for driverless operation statewide, a stark contrast to Tesla’s earlier projection of volume production starting in 2026, which has since been retracted.

The Cybercab, which lacks traditional driver controls, completed production earlier this year. Despite being operational, production limits are tied to Tesla’s battery pack capacity expansion, as highlighted in their second-quarter update. CEO Elon Musk had previously hyped the launch, though the company did not attach a specific production rate to the deployment, raising questions about its future scalability.

On the stock market, Tesla shares rose 5.7% to close at approximately $376 ahead of the launch, reflecting investor anticipation. The company has also increased its capital spending plan for 2026 to over $25 billion, indicating a serious investment into expanding production capabilities despite current financial strains.
