Tesla’s Robotaxi Business Under Scrutiny

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is currently focusing on rolling out its robotaxi business, a vital component of its valuation that exceeds those of rival automakers. CEO Elon Musk initially projected a fleet expansion to cover half of the U.S. population by the end of 2025; however, criticism is mounting due to the rollout’s slower than expected pace. An analysis from July revealed that Tesla logged 380,000 miles with unsupervised robotaxis, showcasing double-digit growth in weekly mileage since the start of 2026.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data indicates only four low-speed impact incidents attributed to Tesla’s unsupervised robotaxis from January to mid-July 2026. Analysts at Ark Invest anticipate that Tesla’s cost per mile for its robotaxi services could be 30% to 50% lower than competitors like Waymo. Despite these promising figures, regulatory hurdles pose significant challenges, with extensive approvals needed state-by-state, potentially impacting the timeline for large-scale deployment into 2027.
