On July 15, 2023, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) collaborated with Nasdaq and over 30 industry participants to conduct a groundbreaking test of processing U.S. trades in a tokenized format. This initiative aims to modernize market infrastructure by improving efficiency and liquidity while preparing for the official launch of DTCC’s Tokenization Service, scheduled for October 2026.

The test involved converting actual trades from The Nasdaq Stock Market into tokens, with the Invesco QQQ exchange-traded fund being a primary security in use. The exercise demonstrated tokenization across various asset classes and use cases, confirming that this innovation could fit within current regulatory frameworks and enhance market dynamics without compromising investor protections.

DTCC’s Tokenization Service will introduce digital representations of traditional assets within a regulated framework, maintaining safeguards as DTC continues to serve as the official recordkeeper. The initiative is designed to ensure interoperability across blockchain networks and to facilitate seamless integration of digital assets into existing market structures.
