Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) reported significant revenue figures for Q2 2023, with its North American commerce segment generating $116.2 billion, yielding an operating income of $9.1 billion for a 7.8% margin. However, its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), also showed notable performance, generating $42.2 billion in revenue and $16.6 billion in operating income, resulting in a 39.3% margin. AWS accounted for about 60% of Amazon’s total operating income, despite comprising only 21% of sales.
Looking ahead, Amazon plans to invest heavily in AWS, with a projected capital expenditure of $220 billion by 2026 to enhance its computing capacity, which is expected to drive further growth. AWS grew by 37% in Q2, significantly outpacing the 16% growth in North American commerce and 15% in international sales, indicating a continuing shift towards a more compute-centric business model.
