Tesla vs. Volvo in Electric Semi Market
Tesla’s electric semitruck production is set to begin in the first half of 2026 at its Nevada factory, aiming for an annual capacity of about 50,000 units. However, Volvo has surpassed Tesla with over 5,000 fully electric semis in operation, logging more than 100 million zero-emission miles since Tesla’s partnership with Pepsi began nearly a decade ago. In comparison, as of early 2026, Tesla has placed “a few hundred” semis into service, primarily in pilot programs.
The entire Class 8 trucking market totaled approximately 208,000 trucks last year. If Tesla captures a modest initial market share, projecting 1,000 sales in its first year and up to 8,000 in five years, it would be considered a successful start. Investors are advised to temper expectations as Tesla works to establish itself in this competitive sector.
