Key Points

  • Chinese automaker BYD has surpassed Tesla in full-electric vehicle deliveries and Ford in total vehicle deliveries in 2025.

  • BYD aims to overtake Toyota to become the top automaker by global sales within five years.

  • In 2022, BYD sold 4.8 million vehicles globally, while Toyota sold 11.3 million.

BYD Co., which ended production of gasoline vehicles in 2022, reported selling more full-electric vehicles than Tesla last year and more new-energy vehicles (including hybrids) than Ford’s total vehicle sales. At an annual shareholder meeting, Chairman Wang Chuanfu announced a target to become the number one automaker globally in five years, requiring more than double their current sales. Despite significant U.S. tariffs on Chinese EVs, BYD intends to grow through international markets, particularly in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

BYD’s vertical integration allows it to manufacture components in-house, reducing costs and speeding up the development process. The company’s recent entry into Japan’s minicar market demonstrates its capability to adapt and succeed across diverse markets. Over the next five years, BYD presents substantial growth potential, especially if it can eventually penetrate the U.S. market.
