Ford Motor Company has seen a critical development as its primary aluminum supplier, Novelis, resumed operations at its Oswego, NY facility following two significant fires in 2025. These incidents, occurring on September 16 and November 20, led to a substantial production loss estimated at approximately 100,000 units for Ford’s F-Series trucks and projected financial setbacks between $1.5 billion and $2 billion through 2026.
The facility is the leading U.S. supplier of automotive-grade aluminum and its shutdown disrupted Ford’s production and inventory levels for crucial models, including the F-150 and the all-electric F-150 Lightning. Ford’s F-Series inventory currently stands at about 50 days of supply, which is below its preferred level, although production is gradually ramping up.
Other automakers were affected as well; Stellantis temporarily halted production of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer due to the supply shortage. Meanwhile, General Motors managed to limit disruptions thanks to pre-existing supply chain risk management strategies developed post the 2011 Japan disaster.
