On Thursday, live cattle futures surged, gaining between $2.55 and $4.80, with cash trade reaching $256-257 per hundredweight. The Fed Cattle Exchange recorded sales at $256.50 for 284 of 1,116 head offered, with dressed sales at $405-$405.50 for 80 head. In response to the confirmed case of the New World Screwworm in South Texas, feeder cattle futures increased significantly, with gains up to the $10.75 limit.
As of Wednesday, the USDA reported 2,077 active screwworm cases in Mexico, including 155 cases in Tamaulipas, 83 in Nuevo Leon, and 35 in Coahuila, some close to the U.S. border. In beef export sales, 5,020 MT was sold for 2026 in the week ending May 28, marking the second-lowest weekly sales for the year.
The USDA estimated Thursday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 108,000 head, totaling 428,000 for the week, which is a decrease of 49,665 from the same week last year. Wholesale boxed beef prices also declined, with Choice down $3.20 to $392.66 and Select down $1.39 at $383.04.
