Fresenius Medical Care (FMS) is experiencing a significant shift in the dialysis market driven by increasing patient demand and capacity challenges. The global demand for dialysis is projected to grow at an annual rate of approximately 4% to 5%, aiming for around 7 million treated patients by 2035.
As of 2025, it is anticipated that 16% of dialysis treatments in the U.S. will occur at home, increasing to about 25% by 2027. FMS currently supports over 85,000 home dialysis patients worldwide and plans to leverage its new 5008X system to enhance high-volume hemodiafiltration (HDF), which it predicts will be a key standard of care in the U.S. This system rollout is described as the largest in FMS’s history, with 100 clinics already utilizing it and more than 100,000 treatments processed as of April 2026.
In the first quarter of 2026, U.S. same-market treatment growth was reported at -0.4%, with management forecasting flat growth for the full year. Financial pressures are compounded by regulatory changes expected to decrease revenue from a key drug adjustment by about €120 million in 2026 and increased operational costs projected between €150 million and €300 million.
