Amazon Unveils $220 Billion Capital Expenditure Plan for 2026
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has announced a record $220 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, a significant increase from the previously projected $200 billion. This investment is part of the largest capital-spending program in the company’s history. The announcement was made by CEO Andy Jassy, with additional contributions expected from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in partnership with Nvidia, which plans to introduce 2 million more graphics processing units (GPUs) into AWS infrastructure by 2028, following an initial deployment of over 1 million GPUs starting in 2026.
Historically, periods of heavy investment have correlated with both losses and significant recoveries for Amazon. The years 2014 and 2022 saw the company experience net losses of $241 million and $2.7 billion, respectively, during times of substantial capital expenditures—$4.9 billion and $58.3 billion, respectively. However, these downturns were followed by significant rebounds in stock performance, including a 118% increase in 2015 and an 81% rise in 2023.
As of now, Amazon’s operating income has risen to $27.5 billion for Q2 2026, and AWS revenue is growing at its fastest pace since 2021. While trailing 12-month purchases of property and equipment have reached $169 billion, indicating an uptick in capital spending, the company is currently managing to maintain profit growth, which is crucial for investor confidence in the wake of its ambitious spending plans.
