American Water Works’ West Virginia American Water unit will invest $0.9 million to replace approximately 2,000 feet of aging water main with a new 6-inch PVC main, part of a broader plan to invest over $129 million in infrastructure improvements in West Virginia in 2026. Over the last decade, the utility has invested more than $805 million in infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of 168 miles of new water mains.

The project addresses the increasing need for modernization in the U.S. water and wastewater systems, where water main breaks occur every two minutes. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that $1.25 trillion will be needed over the next 20 years to maintain and expand these services. Other utilities are also ramping up investments, with California Water Service Group planning to spend $627 million in 2026 and Essential Utilities targeting $1.7 billion for the same year.

In the past three months, American Water Works shares have risen by 13.5%, outperforming the industry, which saw a 7.2% increase. The company currently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
