Cattle Market Shows Varied Performance at Noon

Live cattle futures experienced losses of $1.22 to $2.00 on Friday, August 25, 2023. Cash trade prices are reported at $235 per live pound and $370 dressed in northern markets. Feeder cattle futures saw mixed results, with midday prices showing gains of $1.17 and losses up to 95 cents.

The CME Feeder Cattle Index increased by $4.28 to $352.93 on August 5. USDA’s Federally inspected cattle slaughter for Thursday, August 24, was estimated at 107,000 head, bringing the week-to-date total to 413,000 head, which is an increase of 6,000 head from the previous week but down 36,284 head compared to the same week last year.

Wholesale Boxed Beef prices reported a slight decrease with Choice boxes down $0.36 at $364.22, while Select boxes increased by $1.35 to $349.78, narrowing the Chc/Sel spread to $13.09.
