**Sugar Prices Decline Amid Market Influences**
As of today, October NY world sugar #11 is down 0.02 cents (-0.13%), while October London ICE white sugar #5 has decreased by 3.00 pounds (-0.64%). This drop in sugar prices comes amid a strong U.S. dollar and falling crude oil prices, which have pressured the sugar market by potentially allowing global sugar mills to shift more cane crushing towards sugar production.
Concerns regarding global sugar yields are mounting, particularly in India, where cumulative monsoon rainfall is reported to be 23% below normal as of July 20, compared to 42% below normal on June 30. Notably, last Friday’s Commitment of Traders (COT) data revealed that long positions in ICE London white sugar increased to a record 58,847 net-long positions, potentially exacerbating price declines. The emergence of an El Niño weather pattern could also threaten harvests in major producing regions such as Brazil, India, and Thailand, contributing to a projected global sugar deficit for the upcoming 2026/27 season.
