AI Data Centers Drive Energy Demand Surge

According to Gartner, electricity consumption by data centers is projected to increase by 26% by 2026, reaching 565 terawatt-hours (TWh). This escalation in demand has resulted in bottlenecks, with 30% to 50% of large-scale data center capacities facing delays. In addition, the recent IPOs of three energy companies—Solv Energy (NASDAQ: MWH), X-energy (NASDAQ: XE), and Fervo Energy (NASDAQ: FRVO)—highlight the growing investor interest in advanced energy solutions aimed at meeting this increased demand.

Solv Energy generated $677 million in revenue with a $119 million gross profit in Q1 2023, though it reported a net loss of $27 million. Fervo Energy and X-energy are focusing on geothermal and nuclear technologies, respectively, with X-energy’s Xe-100 reactor design underscoring advancements in safety and efficiency. Both companies remain in early stages of commercialization, with accumulated losses of $276 million and $1.4 billion, respectively, indicating the extensive financial challenges ahead.
