Rocket Lab Corporation (RKLB) has been selected for the U.S. Space Force’s Space Data Network (SDN) Consortium, marking a significant expansion in its role in military space communications. In August 2026, the company secured two delivery orders totaling $12 million, aimed at supporting the development of the Space Data Network Backbone (SDN-B), a secure, high-speed satellite communication network for military operations.

The contracts involve the design, testing, and demonstration of secure optical communications in space, utilizing a company-built Photon spacecraft. An operational demonstration is anticipated in 2027.

While the initial $12 million award is relatively modest, successful execution could position Rocket Lab for more substantial contracts in military satellite communications as the U.S. Space Force advances its networks for global operations.
