MercadoLibre’s Rise as the Dominant Fintech in Latin America

MercadoLibre, Inc. (MELI) reported significant growth in its second-quarter 2026 performance, particularly in its fintech segment, Mercado Pago, which has solidified its standing as Latin America’s leading financial services platform. Monthly Active Users reached 88 million, a 30% increase year-over-year, with Brazil and Mexico showing growth rates of 38% and 45%, respectively.

Assets Under Management (AUM) surged 68% to $23.2 billion, with AUM per user rising by 29% to $264. The credit portfolio grew by 75% to $16.4 billion, while credit-card balances accounted for 47% of total credit exposure, totaling approximately $7.7 billion. Payment volume also saw a significant increase, with Total Payment Volume at $101 billion, a 56% rise year-over-year, and acquiring TPV at $64.1 billion.

Mercado Pago issued 2.6 million new credit cards in the quarter, up from 1.6 million a year prior. The company maintained a low non-performing loan (NPL) ratio at 7%, indicating stable asset quality during its rapid expansion.
