On Thursday, lean hog futures experienced losses between 25 cents and $1.27 for the front months, while deferred futures were mixed. The USDA reported the national base hog price at $92.34, an increase of 24 cents from the previous day. Additionally, the CME Lean Hog Index fell by 82 cents to $93.96 on August 18.
According to the USDA’s weekly export sales data, 27,275 MT of pork was sold for 2026, marking a five-week low, with Mexico purchasing 10,700 MT. Shipments totaled 27,820 MT, also a five-week low, led by Mexico at 13,000 MT. Furthermore, the USDA estimated a federal hog slaughter of 451,000 head on Thursday, summing up to 1.882 million for the week, which is 14,000 head higher than the previous week but 25,769 head lower than the same week last year.
The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value decreased by $1.09 to $96.49, with only the loin and butt primals reporting gains. Closing prices for October 26 hogs were $80.225 (down $1.275), December 26 at $70.750 (down $0.675), and February 27 at $73.825 (down $0.425).
