Hogs Show Varied Performance on Thursday with Front Month Gains

**Hog Market Update: Gains in Lean Hog Futures**

Lean hog futures closed on July 21 with gains of 30 to 70 cents across most front months. The USDA reported the national base hog price at $102.14, an increase of $1.06 from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index rose by 56 cents to $97.08.

The week’s export sales data indicated total pork sales of 28,771 metric tons for 2026, marking a three-week high, while shipments were at 29,459 metric tons, the second lowest of the year. USDA estimated the federally inspected hog slaughter for Thursday at 479,000 head, bringing the week-to-date total to 1.859 million head—9,000 head above the prior week but 1,425 head behind the same week last year. The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value increased by 98 cents to $104.48.
