ImmunityBio (IBRX) is addressing a significant supply shortage of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in the United States, which has impacted bladder cancer treatment. The company aims to enhance access to BCG by entering an exclusive U.S. development and supply agreement for the Tokyo strain of BCG with Japan BCG Laboratory. This agreement grants IBRX the rights to develop, import, and commercialize the strain, while also engaging the FDA for U.S. approval.
ImmunityBio’s Anktiva plus BCG regimen has gained traction in treating non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), with the FDA reviewing a filing for label expansion to include BCG-unresponsive papillary-only disease by January 6, 2027. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network has also updated its guidelines to support this regimen in new settings, further increasing its potential patient population.
Additionally, ImmunityBio has secured five U.S. patents covering its combination therapy, extending protection through 2035. This intellectual property coverage aims to strengthen the company’s market position amid challenges from competing oncology players.
