A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) to pay an additional $567 million for allegations that its social media platforms expose children to harmful content, bringing the total fines to $942 million. Judge Bryan Biedscheid described Meta’s operations as a “public nuisance” that significantly harms children in the state.
As part of the ruling, Meta is mandated to implement several changes, including removing Like counts for users under 18 without parental approval, restricting adult access to minors, and preventing underage users from exchanging nudity. Additionally, Meta must limit push notifications for users under 18 during nighttime and school hours, while capping their usage of Instagram and Facebook to 90 hours a month.
Of the $567 million fine, $420 million is allocated for treating alleged harms through health programs and awareness efforts. In response, Meta plans to appeal the ruling, asserting its commitment to protecting users on its platforms.
