Key Points
Nuclear technology firm Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) has partnered with Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) to develop a nuclear facility in south central Ohio, aiming to support local data centers. This facility is projected to generate 1.2 gigawatts of power, with pre-construction set to begin in 2027 and general construction following in late 2028 or 2029. The first phase of the nuclear plant is expected to come online around 2030, although Oklo is currently pursuing the necessary license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The project will utilize small modular reactors (SMRs) known as “Aurora reactors,” which are designed for quicker and cheaper construction through partial factory manufacturing. However, given the relatively new and untested nature of this technology, significant scaling by 2030 may be unlikely. Additionally, Oklo is already working on a reactor project in Idaho, though its share price has dropped 45% this year amid investor concerns over its business model.
