Samsung Announces Record Shareholder Return
Samsung Electronics’ board approved a shareholder return plan for 2026 estimated at 90 trillion to 110 trillion won (approximately $65 billion to $80 billion), marking the largest payout in the company’s history and five times its previous record of 20.3 trillion won in 2020. This announcement, made Friday, follows a substantial increase in operating profit due to rising demand for AI memory products.
Upon market reopening on Monday, Samsung’s shares dropped 8.7% in Seoul, contributing to a more than 3% decline in the Kospi index, as investors were anticipating a return of up to 150 trillion won. Other memory manufacturers, including Sandisk and Micron, also experienced declines between 5% and 7% in their stock values.
Market reactions suggest that while the payout is record-breaking, uncertainties regarding future cash commitments and buyback specifics have led to disappointment among investors.
