Tesla and Automakers to Recall 4 Million Vehicles Over Door Handle Safety Concerns

Nine automakers, led by Tesla, are recalling over 4 million vehicles in response to safety concerns with electric door handles that may hinder emergency access. Nearly 3 million of these vehicles are from Tesla, which includes the Model 3, Y, S, and X. This decision follows incidents in China where malfunctioning door handles prevented quick exits during emergencies, raising alarms among regulators.

The recall was officially announced on August 21, 2023, amid increasing scrutiny from Chinese regulators, particularly after a reported death linked to a failure to open a vehicle door during an accident. Automakers will implement corrective measures, including adding warning labels and making software updates to ensure doors can be opened following a crash.

In a separate but related issue, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating these door handle malfunctions, which could arguably impact Tesla’s branding as it has become emblematic of the company’s futuristic design ethos.
