Tesla Begins Pilot Production of Cybercab
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has initiated pilot production of its Cybercab, a fully autonomous electric vehicle designed for ride-sharing. The first-quarter earnings report indicated that the launch comes as the company’s paid Robotaxi miles nearly doubled sequentially. However, full-scale production is not expected to ramp up quickly, with CEO Elon Musk noting that initial production will be slow.
In Q1, Tesla reported revenue growth of 16% year-over-year, with total vehicle deliveries totaling 358,023, down from 418,227 in Q4. The company also saw growth in its Full Self-Driving subscriptions, increasing from 1.10 million to 1.28 million. Despite this, rising global vehicle inventory and growth in the automotive business suggest ongoing pressure in the core vehicle segment.
Looking ahead, Tesla aims for the Cybercab to eventually replace the Model Y in its Robotaxi fleet. However, Musk cautioned that significant revenue from the autonomous service may not materialize until next year, as expansion is dependent on both production capacity and regulatory approvals.
