High-Bandwidth Memory Shortage Impacting Market
Exploding demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is causing a severe supply shortage across the memory market. This scarcity is benefiting major manufacturers like SK Hynix, Micron Technology, and Samsung, who are capitalizing on strong pricing power and locking in high margins. Analysts predict memory prices could continue to rise into 2028, with some forecasts extending into 2030 due to the expected widening supply-demand gap.
Recently, conventional memory prices surged by 55% to 60% in a single quarter, with some DRAM prices more than doubling from a year ago. Memory revenue is projected to reach roughly $200 billion this year, which constitutes about 25% of total semiconductor sales. The escalating costs are already affecting consumer electronics, leading to reduced shipments of both smartphones and PCs.
Leading companies in the HBM sector, including SK Hynix and Micron Technology, have seen their stock prices surge amid the shortage. However, investors are cautioned about the cyclical nature of the memory industry, as past shortages eventually give way to oversupply. This highlights the necessity for careful investment strategies in a landscape marked by volatility.
