Meta Platforms Faces Major Legal Challenge
Shares of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) dropped as much as 4.1% on Tuesday, settling down 3.3% by 1:10 p.m. ET, following the commencement of a significant child safety trial in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The case involves allegations from the attorneys general of California, Colorado, New Jersey, and Kentucky that Meta designed its platforms to be addictive, contributing to a mental health crisis in younger users.
A total of 29 states have filed lawsuits against Meta, seeking damages estimated at over $200 billion, with the company suggesting that claims could total $1.4 trillion—equal to its market cap. The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks, with a potentially lengthy appeals process following the verdict.
Earlier this year, a jury in New Mexico found Meta’s platforms harmful to children’s mental health, resulting in fines totaling $942 million. The trial’s outcome may significantly influence the future of social media regulations.
