Key Points

Oklo Inc. (NYSE: OKLO) is focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs) to address the growing energy demands of the artificial intelligence industry. Over the next few years, an estimated $7 trillion is expected to be invested in scaling data center infrastructure, creating an urgent need for reliable energy sources as traditional grids are insufficient.

According to a report from Goldman Sachs, nuclear energy is poised for a revival due to advancements in technology and increased electricity demand. Analysts from Bank of America noted that nuclear energy is being “rediscovered” for its reliable power and low carbon footprint. Oklo aims to meet this demand but must first secure regulatory approval to build SMR systems; it has resubmitted its design to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission after a previous denial in 2022.

Despite regulatory hurdles, Oklo has signed a contract with Meta Platforms to develop a 1.2 gigawatt SMR system in Ohio, illustrating its market interest from major AI companies. The company’s direct marketing to data center operators could position it favorably in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
