**Lean Hog Futures Decline Amid Rising Short Positions**

On Friday, lean hog futures fell between 80 cents and $1.25, with October contracts decreasing by $3.42 for the week. The USDA reported a national base hog price of $81.76, while the CME Lean Hog Index dropped by 79 cents to $85.02 as of September 14. In the week ending September 15, managed money increased its net short position in lean hog futures and options to a record 31,401 contracts, adding 7,845 contracts.

The USDA also noted a decrease in the pork carcass cutout value, which fell by 56 cents to $86.98, with only the rib and belly prices showing increases. Additionally, federally inspected hog slaughter for the week was estimated at 2.49 million head, down by 102,381 head from the same week last year. Key closing prices include October hogs at $78.10, December hogs at $68.55, and February hogs at $70.15.
