Today, among the Russell 3000 index components, an aberrant spike was noted in options trading volume, particularly in the cases of Planet Fitness Inc (PLNT), Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (GPI), and VAALCO Energy, Inc. (EGY).
For PLNT, a striking 8,476 contracts have exchanged hands, representing approximately 847,600 underlying shares. Such a surge amounts to about 62.8% of PLNT’s average daily trading volume over the past month of 1.3 million shares. Notably, the $60 strike put option expiring March 15, 2024, has experienced remarkable activity with 4,056 contracts traded today, equivalent to approximately 405,600 underlying shares of PLNT.
Similarly, GPI options have seen a considerable volume of 1,033 contracts today, which represent about 103,300 underlying shares, comprising a significant 62.5% of GPI’s average daily trading volume over the past month. The $210 strike put option expiring July 19, 2024, has stood out with 825 contracts traded, equivalent to approximately 82,500 underlying shares of GPI.
EGY options have shown a traded volume of 3,808 contracts today, representing roughly 380,800 underlying shares, around 60.4% of EGY’s average daily trading volume over the past month. Especially noteworthy is the activity around the $5 strike call option expiring January 17, 2025, with 3,700 contracts traded, representing approximately 370,000 underlying shares of EGY.
