Amazon Leo Set to Compete with SpaceX’s Starlink

Amazon is entering the satellite internet market with its Amazon Leo service, which aims to provide global broadband access. The company has launched 180 satellites so far, with plans for a total of over 3,000. Amazon Leo is expected to begin offering services later this year, already securing commercial partnerships with companies such as AT&T, DirecTV Latin America, and JetBlue. Amazon has also announced plans to acquire Globalstar for approximately $11.6 billion to enhance its service offerings, including mobile connectivity through partnerships with Apple.

SpaceX currently leads the market with over 7,800 satellites in orbit through its Starlink service, which generated revenue between $15 billion and $16 billion last year. The competitive landscape is shifting, as Amazon’s substantial cash reserves of $123 billion allow it to pursue aggressive strategies against SpaceX’s anticipated IPO valued at around $2 trillion. Analysts suggest that while SpaceX has established a solid customer base, Amazon Leo’s entry will present significant challenges to its market dominance.
