Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Sony Semiconductor Solutions have entered into a definitive agreement to form the Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, a joint venture based in Kumamoto, Japan, focused on smartphone image sensors. Volume production is slated to begin in 2029. This follows a non-binding memorandum signed in May 2023 to advance next-generation image sensor technology, with plans to explore emerging physical AI applications.

TSMC will invest approximately 282 billion yen, while Sony will contribute nearly 465 billion yen through cash and asset transfers. The capital contributions will occur in phases according to market demand. Regulatory approvals are required before the deal closes, after which Sony will act as the joint venture’s controlling shareholder.

The collaboration aims to accelerate image sensor commercialization and expand manufacturing capacity, with TSMC providing advanced technology and Sony leading product development. Additional investments for enhancing production capabilities are under consideration with support from the Japanese government.
