Uber Technologies and Wayve have moved toward launching autonomous rides in London after Transport for London (TfL) granted Private Hire Vehicle licenses to Wayve’s self-driving, all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles. Inspections confirmed compliance with TfL’s safety requirements. This approval satisfies one component of the “triple-lock” requirement for Private Hire journeys, crucial for the rollout expected later this summer.
Over 100,000 London residents have registered their interest in participating in the service. While Wayve’s AI technology will guide the vehicles, a TfL-licensed driver will remain onboard for supervision. Wayve’s AI-first AV2.0 system allows the vehicle to adapt across various environments, having been tested in London since 2018.
This initiative is part of Uber’s strategy to integrate autonomous vehicles into its platform, enhancing operational efficiency and contributing to safer, cleaner transportation. A successful launch could provide valuable data to improve future deployments and expand availability in major cities.
